The Conservation K9 Camp provides an entry-level immersion in scent detection and dog handling for ecologists, citizen scientists and enthusiasts interested in the use of dogs for conservation. Our 5-day camps for 2024 are running in SEQ between 29 Apr to 3 May and 1 Sept to 6 Sept. Spaces are strictly limited.

Our April 2024 Camp features very special guest instructors Rita Santos from Dogs For Nature and Ella Watkins (Red Dog Ecology).

Afterpay is available to those booking this clinic.

Camps are held on our 150-acre farm in the Sunshine Coast hinterland at Landsborough, SEQ 4550, offering a variety of different landscapes for survey. Camps in other regions are hosted and managed by third parties. Please contact us if you would like to host a camp.

Facilitated by internationally-recognised conservation detection dog team trainer - and host of The Conservation K9 Podcast - James Davis and other expert trainers, the camp features:

  • Hands-on training sessions in reward selection, drive and motivation; odour storage and management; dog handling; indication; environmental considerations, and survey techniques for you and your dog

  • In-person and Zoom presentations / Q&A sessions from the leading conservation detection dog practitioners from around the world. Previous expert presenters include:

  • A fully collaborative learning experience, where each presenter, facilitator and participant shares their own experiences across different dog or scientific disciplines.

Participants enjoy:

  • An immersion into the world of conservation scent detection and handling

  • Perhaps even star in an episode of The Conservation K9 Podcast!

Please note:

  • Costs of travel to and from camp, food / drinks and camping costs including the hire of tents / trailers / vans / caravans are not included in the price.

  • Camping is available free of charge on-site but is very primitive (suitable for swags, hammocks or small tents only). Facilities are basic (portable toilet, fridge, microwave, gas burner, firepit only). Alternatively camping with more ‘conveniences’ (including space for caravans) can be booked less than 2 mins away at Ocean View Tourist Park. Please note, dogs are only allowed on campsites at the park - not in the cabins. Please book accommodation directly with Ocean View. There are also a number of dog-friendly AirBnB’s locally.

  • Dogs must be on a lead or long line at all times, and safely housed in a suitable crate when resting. Dogs must be comfortable, relaxed and not too aggressively reactive around people, livestock and other dogs. They must have a desire to sniff and play, and have lots of drive! They must be happily crate trained and have vaccinations and tick protection up to date. They MUST NOT chase livestock or wildlife if they are to be off-lead.

  • Spaces are strictly limited.

  • Refunds and booking changes are subject to the following conditions. By booking you are agreeing to these conditions:

    • Booking postponements / deferrals to a later camp date can be made at any time >14 days before camp start date.

    • Full refunds (minus fees incurred) are provided if requested >90 days before camp start date. 25% refunds are provided 31-89 days before camp start date. No refunds are available if requested <30 days prior to camp start date. No refunds are available for already postponed / deferred registrations.
