What is Canine Myofunctional Therapy (CMT)?
Canine Myofunctional Therapy (myo – pertaining to the muscle) is the professionally and correctly applied remedial and sports massage to dogs that is designed to improve their health and wellbeing all throughout their life and to treat the body systems as a whole.
“After a therapeutic massage session, the “feel good” sensation removes any nervous tension and anxiety. The sensation experienced by your dog will convey a sense of gratification and re-connection with life that subconsciously promotes recovery and improvement.” (Hourdebaigt, 2004).
CMT has many benefits:
Calming and relaxing - beneficial for anxious or rescue dogs
Increases blood flow, flexibility, and nutrients to muscles
Reduces tension in the muscles
Assists with joint issues, e.g. arthritis
Beneficial for dogs in high endurance sports e.g. agility
Puppies – calming and for rapidly growing bodies
Post-injury or when recovering from surgery
Can assist in improving the immune system, digestion, and lowering blood pressure
Potentially can identify other health issues during massage e.g. sore areas that can be investigated by a vet
