Did my dog just bite me? Understanding the intent behind your dog's behaviour

Dog bites, nips, and muzzle grasps are different types of mouth-related behaviours in dogs, each with distinct meanings and intentions.

Dog Bites

  • Definition: A bite is when a dog clamps down on something or someone with its teeth, often applying significant pressure.

  • Intent & Context: Bites can occur due to fear, aggression, pain, territorial behaviour, or strong prey drive. A serious bite may break the skin and cause injury.

  • Examples:

    • A scared dog biting when cornered.

    • A resource-guarding dog biting to protect food or toys.

Nips

  • Definition: A quick, small bite that usually does not break the skin. It is often more of a warning or a playful action rather than a full bite.

  • Intent & Context:

    • Dogs may nip during play, especially puppies learning bite inhibition.

    • Some herding breeds nip to control movement, a behaviour rooted in their instincts.

    • A dog might nip to express excitement or mild annoyance.

  • Examples:

    • A herding breed nipping at ankles.

    • A puppy nipping during rough play.

Muzzle Grasp

  • Definition: A gentle or firm hold of another dog's muzzle (or your hand / arm) using the mouth, usually without biting down hard.

  • Intent & Context:

    • A social behaviour often seen in dog interactions, where a more confident dog may use it to establish leadership or reinforce social bonds.

    • Mother dogs use muzzle grasps to correct puppies.

    • Many dogs use it in play, to demonstrate affection, or as a calming signal.

  • Examples:

    • A dog gently grasping another dog’s muzzle during play.

    • A mother dog correcting a puppy with a controlled grasp.

    • Your dog gently mouthing your hand or arm when happy to see you.
